Your Doll & You: A Guide to Mechanic's Robot

Mechanic is a playable survivor in Identity V and one of my personal favorites. Like all survivors she has unqiue traits and abilities that differenciate her from the rest of the cast, one of these abilities is her deployable doll. This doll functions exactly like a survivor and can do everything Mechanic herself can do (with the exception of picking up items), the difference is that the doll can be downed in 1 hit instead of 2.

With this, Mechanic quickly becomes one of the most versatile survivors in the game. However, the doll can be very hard to use because the vast amount of usability it has makes it confusing as to when to know when and how to use it. This guide will cover how to use the doll in ways you probably never thought of and show how to efficently use it.

1.) Decoding

Decoding is one of Mechanic's specialties since she has a passive 45% increased decoding speed. However, for every injured/dowed/chaired survivor her decoding speed is drastically decreased. Conviently, her doll works around this disadvantage. Although the Mechanic's decoding speed is lowered, her doll still decodes at the base speed of a survivor. Mechanic can also work on the same cipher together.

While working on the same cipher together, the cipher will be completed quicker but the disadvantage is that the robot and Mechanic herself both get skillchecks. There is no indication oh when the robot recieves a skillcheck so it's primarily guesswork. The rule of thumb I personally go by is that you stay decoding with the robot, and everytime you get a skillcheck as the robot have Mechanic work on the cipher with it for a few seconds before switching back to the robot, rinse and repeat. This strategy becomes very difficult with a Thief on your team due to the increase of skillchecks but it's still very possible.

In order to conserve doll's charges whilst making the most of out the doll, I'd recommend the following decoding strategy:

0 survivors injured/downed/chaired: Have Mechanic work on the cipher alone
1 survivor injured/downed/chaired: Have Mechanic work on the cipher alone
2 survivors injured/downed/chaired: Have Mechanic and the doll work on the cipher together
3 survivors injured/downed/chaired: Only use the doll to decode
4 survivors injured/downed/chaired: Only use doll to decode



2.) Healing & Self Saving

Mechanic's robot can be used to heal allies, but more importantly it can be used to heal herself. If a Mechanic sucesfully escapes a chase she can summon the robot and have the robot heal her back to full health.

Special to the Mechanic, she can also control the doll while she is downed or on a chair. However, she cannot deploy the doll while downed or chaired. This means if Mechanic wishes to pick herself up or save herself from a rocket chair, she needs to summon the doll in advance. Otherwise, you save with the doll the same exact way you'd save as any other survivor. However more caution is needed as the doll will be knocked down in only one hit, so approach potential rocket chair saves with caution. If the hunter is patrolling within close proximity of a chaired survivor, it's a better use of the robot to have it decode than to waste a significant amount of charges on a botched rescue operation.



3.) Bodyblocking

The doll can be used to bodyblock the hunter's attacks. This makes Mechanic excellent in chases against hunters like Clown and Gamekeeper, as the robot blocks Gamekeeper hooks and Clown rocket dashes. While in a chase, keep an eye on the hunter. If you see them charging an ability that can be bodyblocked, summon the doll just before the ability would hit Mechanic. The doll will tank the hit instead, and if you timed it well the robot will not be damaged. How does this work? Well during the summoning animation, the doll is immune to attacks. This means that not only will you have blocked an attack but if the hunter decides to kill the doll it also creates additional space in the chase for Mechanic to work with.



4.) Opening the Gate

Mechanic's slower decoding from injured teammates isn't restricted to just decoding. It also significantly increases the time it takes for Mechanic to open the exit gate. However, the doll also bypasses this slowing effect too. Even better, opening the gate doesn't have skillchecks, so Mechanic can put the doll on the exit gate keypad and then do other tasks like helping a teammate.



5) General Tips

The doll can hide inside lockers, Mechanic can put it in a locker to hide it and control it later in the match.

Mechanic is a very strong counter to Violetta/Soul Weaver, if the doll is sent to rescue it can tank all the webs and save the chaired person. The robot is expendable, but you need your teammates to win.

The robot can NOT be used while Mechanic is getting carried by the hunter, this means the Mechanic cannot use pallets the save herself if she's being carried by the hunter.
